The Contract “Priority Projects of the Larnaca Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP) – Implementation of Bus Lanes and Bicycle Paths No. Tender: CSF/13/2024/E(A) with a construction cost of more than 20 million euros.
In a statement of the Ministry, it is stated that “the contract was signed, on behalf of the Republic of Cyprus, by the Director of the Public Works Department, Eleftherios Eleftheriou, and on behalf of the company Araco Construction Cy Ltd, Mohammed Rokaya”.
The project concerns “the promotion of Public Transport and the development of multimodality in the transport interconnection of the local nuclei of the Municipalities of the city of Larnaca through the reconfiguration of the main axes of the city of Larnaca, in the priority axes of the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP), aiming at the same time to enhance road safety, improve accessibility, maximize mobility, to upgrade the quality of life and ensure economic sustainability”.
Among other things, the works of the project include, scraping (milling) and reconstruction of the surface layer of the road surface and the creation of bus lanes including bus stop infrastructure, bicycle lane construction works and bicycle infrastructure. They also include works for the creation of parking spaces, the construction and reconstruction of sidewalks, the construction of photo-controlled crossings for pedestrians and cyclists, Pelican-type photo-controlled crossings, and “Zebra” type pedestrian crossings.
Furthermore, the project includes “works for the installation of new and/or upgrades of existing traffic lights, horizontal and vertical signage including informational/guideline signs, as well as accompanying works for the infrastructure and drainage of green spaces, infrastructure and connections of street lighting, sewerage, rainwater, water supply and irrigation infrastructure as detailed in the Contract”.
It is noted that “in the streets where bicycle lanes are incorporated, space is assigned to cyclists on the road surface, with the appropriate horizontal and vertical signage, delimited both with a distinct colored surface and with the implementation of natural means of separation (curbs, flexible piles, etc.) while a number of roads include the construction of bicycle infrastructure on the sidewalk”.
The tender announcement “was made through an open procedure and was awarded to the company Araco Construction Cy Ltd, for an amount of €18,343,026.30 plus VAT. The works will start in September 2025 and are expected to be completed in January 2027 with a construction duration of 16 months”.
The Project is funded by the Recovery and Resilience Plan and National Resources.
