Travel Rules for UK Citizens Awaiting Residency in Cyprus
Following the UK’s withdrawal from the EU, UK nationals living in Cyprus who applied for residency under the EU Withdrawal Agreement may face questions about whether they can travel while their application is still being processed.
1. Re-Entry with a Stamped Receipt
When you submit your residency application to the Civil Registry & Migration Department, you receive a payment receipt.
If this receipt includes a blue re-entry stamp, you may leave and re-enter Cyprus by presenting:
- Your passport
- Your stamped payment receipt
Important: The stamp will usually state that re-entry is valid only if you have not been abroad for more than three months.
2. If Your Receipt Has No Stamp
If your payment receipt does not have the re-entry stamp—or if you have lost it—you must apply for a re-entry permit before you travel.
You will need:
- Your passport
- A €10.25 stamp duty
- The relevant application form (available at the Civil Registry & Migration Department)
These permits are typically issued on the spot, but are generally granted only for serious reasons such as medical emergencies.
3. Time Limit Abroad
Regardless of your document’s printed validity, if you remain outside Cyprus for more than three consecutive months, your pink slip (temporary residence) is automatically cancelled.
Summary Table
| Situation | Travel Allowed? | Documents Needed | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stamped receipt | Yes | Passport + stamped receipt | Valid if abroad less than 3 months |
| Receipt without stamp | Maybe | Passport + re-entry permit | Apply before leaving |
| Lost receipt | Maybe | Passport + re-entry permit | Apply before leaving |
| Abroad > 3 months | No | N/A | Residency cancelled. Need to re-apply |
Practical Tips:
- Always check your payment receipt for the re-entry stamp before planning travel.
- Carry both your stamped receipt and any residency application documents when crossing borders.
- Avoid trips longer than three months until your residency is granted.
